Overview

This course is a one day face to face program that looks at building staff capacity to work with people with dementia and covers basic dementia theory, types, symptoms, how dementia affects the brain etc., communicating with people with dementia, meaningful engagement for people with dementia, responding to changing mood and behaviour. The course is a practical hands on workshop which utilises a four step critical thinking approach to build capacity of staff to work with people with dementia and minimise and respond to responsive behaviours. Course includes some role playing and case study discussions (these can be current cases that the facility is currently dealing with). Participants in this workshop will gain an understanding of:
  • A person-centred approach and effective communication;
  • The nature of dementia and its impacts;
  • Changed behaviours and effective responses;
  • Activities to promote well-being; and
  • Workplace issues, community support and services available
