Reframing dementia explains why we should be moving away from care delivery models for people with dementia that are disease and problem focused and moving towards approaches that support people to live well with dementia. It will briefly review how we can make life meaningful, manageable and comprehensible for people living with dementia and how these principles are reflected in the 2019 aged care quality standards. The session will then concentrate on person-centred thinking and behaviour and its contribution to resident wellbeing. The VIPS model (Brooker, 2007; Brooker & Latham, 2015) will be used to unpack person-centred care. The language used by staff will be explored in relation to principles of respect and valuing the person with dementia as well as an indicator of care culture.
On completion of the workshop participants will be able to: - Identify the relationship between contemporary dementia practice and the 2019 Aged Care Quality Standards - Recognise the potential for wellbeing in people living with dementia - Understand the difference between pathogenic and Salutogenic models of care - Reflect on the thinking and behaviours that contribute to person-centred care and resident wellbeing - Reflect on how language can impact on the care provided
