The View from Here: Skills in Dementia Care for Acute Settings course was designed to help nurses and other health professionals develop the knowledge and practice skills they need to care for people with dementia in hospitals. The course is visual and interactive comprising nine topics that take approximately 30 minutes each to work through. Content includes video case studies illustrating interactions, assessments and strategies with links and downloads of tools and other resources.
Topics 1-9 – Key Learning Outcomes: - Understand the neuropsychological basis for responsive behaviours - Differentiate between symptoms of delirium and dementia - Recognise that applying the principles of PCC can improve the quality of care for people with dementia - Understand the impact of dementia on communication and identify/develop communication strategies which can assist in facilitating communication - Identify and use informal tools for information gathering about the patient’s personal history and current functional status - Identify, assess and develop strategies for managing pain in a patient with dementia - Identify meaningful activities for a person with dementia - Identify both psychosocial and physical factors in the environment that may impact on the person with dementia - Utilise tools to observe, assess and document function and behaviour in the acute care setting over time - Understand where to access the latest evidence in relation to use of antipsychotic medication for people with dementia
