Certificate of Completion
This module introduces you to the basic neuropathology of dementia and the responsive behaviours associated with dementia.
Suitable for people working in:
Acute Care, Primary Care
This module is part of the course:
The view from here - acute care
DTA currently uses different terms for behaviour. We will be progressively moving to the term Changed Behaviour in all our content.
Neuropathology
In this module we explore what dementia is, types and prevalence of dementia, and the prevalence of dementia in hospitals and how this impacts length of stay and outcomes for patients who have dementia.
We examine the basic neuropathology of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.
The bulk of the module focuses on learning about how dementia-related damage to particular regions of the brain affects brain function. We look at how this relates to a person's cognitive difficulties and responses in the acute care setting.
In the last part of the module we consider how symptoms of dementia and responsive behaviours may manifest in a patient in the clinical setting.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module you should be able to:
-
understand the neuropsychological basis for responsive behaviours
-
identify how dementia-related damage to cortical structures may impact patient behaviour
Continuing Professional Development
A completion certificate for CPD credit is awarded upon completion of this module.
