Behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) can lead to quality of life impacts in not only the individual with dementia, but also others around them.
This module, delivered by ThinkGP, explores the assessment of BPSD using the ABC (antecedent, behaviour, consequence) model, and discusses the management of BPSD using pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods as well as the management of comorbid conditions associated with dementia.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and how they may present.
- Address BPSD and carer issues related to these behaviours.
- Explain the treatment options for the various behaviours.
- Describe the non-pharmacological and pharmacological options available to treat BPSD and the indications for both.
- Ensure patient safety by developing appropriate management plans for patients with dementia who develop BPSD.
